Описание: When compost is applied on soil, as food and cover, two or three months before sowing or planting, it will be broken up into a crumbly state by weather. And some will have disappeared into the soil already when our seeds or plants are ready to go in the ground.

In addition, compost contains nutrients that are not soluble in water. They remain near the surface until used by the biological networks common in no dig soil. You never need to use fertilisers because the nutrients are there and available as needed, thanks to mycorrhizal and rhizophagy networks.

Plus, any lumpy, wet and sticky compost breaks open nicely on top of soil, better than it can when in a heap.

A no digger can step out in the first mild weather after frost has lifted, to rejoice in a wonderful soft surface that is ready for seeds and transplants. This is particularly the case when a bed layout allows access from say 40cm / 16 in pathways, leaving the much larger growing area soft and friable (see Chapter 2), and with no wooden sides in the way.

No moisture is lost to cultivation, and you have a tilth for sowing into whatever the weather, even if wet. In the medium and longer term, there is the huge bonus of fewer weeds.
