The Hardest Painting I’ve Done!

Who knew creating a rainbow landscape could be so challenging? I practiced this piece twice and even painted the scene once before tackling it for this commission. Capturing the stunning reference image was essential, as I aimed to do the beautiful landscape justice. This Maine harbor landscape scene features intricate layers, with boats and a striking double rainbow adding depth.
I began with trimming arches cold press watercolor paper to 11x14 and then jumped in with watercolors in the sky, employing wet-on-wet techniques and a carefully planned color palette. After building up multiple layers of color, I sketched a few boats with a graphite pencil and then used white gouache along with yellow ochre, cobalt blue, and Payne's grey to render the smaller boats in the distance and their intricate details, ensuring accurate atmospheric perspective. Despite the stress involved, this painting has become one of my favorites and presented a rewarding challenge.

Holbein and Daniel Smith watercolors, white gouache, ink, graphite pencil, and arches cold press watercolor paper.
