Viserys stands atop one of the many balconies of Dragonstone, seeing first the waves crashing against the walls of the ancient castles, and then towards the fleet surrounding the island,

Finally, he looks across the Blackwater Bay where King’s Landing sits at its mouth. It should be his city now, as his father is dead. He should be sitting on the Iron Throne and commanding his armies to crush these rebel lords.

Instead, he sits here in this castle, watching his realm falling from a world away. His mother is more concerned about their safety there, assuring him that the Royal Fleet will protect them and the rebels don’t have enough ships to storm the castle.

It could take months, even years, for that to happen, and by then they might have a plan. As he stares at the fleet, there are hundreds of galleys and warships. It would be more than enough to crush any force sent against him.

As Rhaella calls him back to his chambers, Viserys follows. He does not see the little black boat slipping into the hidden cove at the base of the island.

While Stannis does not have a fleet, he does have Davos, and the smuggler is said to know the secret entrances to half the castles in the Seven Kingdoms. Dragonstone is no different, and he leads a small contingent through the inlet that leads to a small gate. This leads them directly to the castle.

From there, Stannis takes over as he leads a contingent of men into the castle. They do not battle the guards in the courtyard, but slink through the halls, securing critical areas while Stannis takes a group of men to the Stone Drum, where the royal family is hiding.

Viserys wakes up to the sound of heavy boots against his door. It buckles and heaves while Ser Willem Darry draws his sword and steps in front of him. He prepares to fight just as Stannis and his men file in.

The knight roars and charges at Stannis, their swords locking above his head before Ser Willem pulls back and prepares to attack again. Crying out, he gives three quick strikes, each one checked by Stannis, but the old knight punches him in the stomach.

The air wooshes out of him, but he catches himself. He manages to stop a slash that is aimed at his neck, pushing it aside and growling. As their weapons lock, he roars and begins to attack again, his blows raining down. Despite his age, Ser Willem proves able to stop each one.

Finally, Ser Willem overcommits to one strike, and Stannis steps back. The older knight stumbles forward, and Stannis sweeps his leg and drops him to the ground. Ser Cortnay follows and announces that Lady Rhaella wishes to surrender the castle to them as Stannis’s men take Viserys into custody.

They find her in the stairway, being supported by Ser Davos due to her pregnancy. Still, once she sees Stannis, she draws herself up and folds her arms together.

Rhaella: Ser Stannis, where is my son?

Stannis: He is in my custody. I confined him to his chambers. I do not wish to harm him.

Rhaella: Unless I surrender.

Stannis: No, I do not wish to harm him, but I will if I must. Whether you surrender is entirely up to you.

Rhaella: Oh, have no fear, ser. I am not blind to my situation. I will not try to resist this. My castle has fallen, and with it, the Targaryen dynasty. I will not try to salvage what is lost. However, do you intend to have my son and me executed?

Stannis: Surprised. My lady? What would make you think I would do that?

Rhaella: My grandchildren, my nephew.

Stannis: That was Lannister work.

Rhaella: And Robert calls himself king. Has the stag lost its antlers already and cannot enforce the King’s Justice?

Stannis: I am not certain of anything, but I am not Tywin Lannister. I will not simply send you or your children off to die.

Rhaella sees the sincerity in Stannis’s voice. She looks at his cool blue eyes and decides to trust him. She nods to her men, who drop their swords and allow the Baratheon forces to occupy the castle.

When word reaches Robert, he is pleased by this and orders that they be brought to King’s Landing. Stannis agrees, but does not go there right away.
