Riot violence resulted in more than 50 dead and hundreds injured.

The defense has raised concerns that the accused have been jailed for five years with little progress in trial proceedings. There is debate over the duration of custody, timeliness of the charge sheet, and fairness in applying UAPA, which makes bail especially difficult.
