This is a live recording of a patient’s oral microbiome. I have taken a sample from just under the patient’s gum line to see the microbiota living there.
It is a dysbiotic biofilm, which is to say there are opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria, fungi and parasites living amongst the bacteria that should be there.
In this video, I point out spirochetes (pathogenic bacteria), white blood cells, amoeba and trichomonads (parasites) and fungi (likely candida) that should not be there in a healthy sample.
In our practice, we test all our patients’ biofilm and do a live screening for the microbes. Spirochetes are a biomarker that show us when the microbiome is starting to become dysbiotic. White blood cells are called to action to fight off these intruders. Fungi like candida are present when the immune system is compromised like during cancer treatment or infections. Parasites will often come from contaminated water, pets or close contacts with the parasite. Amoeba and trichomonads will be in most of the pockets of patients with periodontal disease. Using the phase-contrast microscope to see these microbes is easy, quick, cheap but sometimes very confronting.
Disrupting the dysbiotic biofilm is the aim of the dental hygiene appointment and we can do so gently with air polishing (https://cosmicsmile.com.au/ems-airflo...) and dental lasers (https://cosmicsmile.com.au/laser-dent.... Once the oral microbiome is restored to health we can help to monitor and maintain it and avoid complicated and expensive dental treatment.
