The Werndl-Holub rifle (1867) was the first centerfire metallic cartridge infantry rifle of the the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The original cartridge was 11.15 x 42mmR. Later, in 1877, the cartridge was necked down and improved to 11.15 x 58mmR. This original piece displays the date 1870 but has been modified to accept the improved cartridge. The slug that I use in this video is .446 inches and 370 grains, 20 parts lead, 1 part tin. I loaded these cartridges with 75 grains of Goex FF. I have tried some reduced loads with this piece (60 grains of FF) but have decided to go back to 75 grains. To my knowledge, 77 grains of FF was the original load for the cartridge.
The rifle shoots high at 100 yards and a bit to the right. The sights have no windage adjustment, so I've gotten used to holding it a tad to the left.
I'm still learning a lot about this great historical piece but feel very fortunate to own it and make this sweet thing sing again!
Also, I would like to extend an extra thank you to my friend Joe, whose iPhone camera work has made all of these videos possible.
