VICAR’S CORNER
Our 21-Day Prayer and Fasting
As we begin this New Year with 21 days of prayer and fasting, we are making a deliberate spiritual statement: God comes first. If you have not joined, it’s a good time to join. Be a full-fledge member of the church and enjoy the corporate flow therein.
In our country where the year often opens with economic uncertainty, security concerns, health challenges, and unanswered questions, as Christians, we are not called to respond with fear, but with faith. Prayer and fasting position us to begin the year from the place of divine alignment rather than human anxiety.
The Bible teaches us that the beginning of a matter is important. Proverbs 3: 5–6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding. By dedicating the first days of the year to God, we are committing our plans, families, businesses, careers, and nation into His hands. We are declaring, like Jesus, that “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” – Deut. 8: 3 and Matt. 4:4.
In Scripture, God’s people often fasted at critical moments. In 2nd Chron. 20: 3–4, King Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast when Judah faced a national crisis, and God granted victory. In Nigeria today, we face personal and collective battles—financial pressure, delayed expectations, academic struggles, and concerns about our future. This season of fasting is our way of saying, “Lord, we need Your intervention.”
Prayer and fasting also bring spiritual renewal and clarity. Isa. 58: 6 promises that true fasting breaks yokes, releases burdens, and brings light into darkness. As we pray, God will reorder our priorities, heal our hearts, restore our hope, and sharpen our spiritual sensitivity. May answers we seek come by quiet waiting in God’s presence.
Furthermore, this period prepares us for divine direction and empowerment. In Acts 13: 2–3, the early church fasted and prayed, and the Holy Spirit spoke clearly. As individuals and as a church, we trust God to give us guidance for decisions, direction for ministries, and strength for the journey ahead.
What the year may demand from us, God will supply through His grace – 2nd Cor. 12: 9.
As we engage in this 21-day prayer and fasting, let us do so with unity, faith, and expectation. Joel 2: 12–13 calls us to return to the Lord with all our hearts. This is not a burden, but a blessing—an invitation to walk with God intentionally.
May this season usher us into a year of divine covering, open doors, spiritual growth, and visible testimonies, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Again, welcome to 2026, “Our year of Kingdom Expectation and Preparation.
Your Brother, Friend, Vicar and Archdeacon.
