The Consumer Confidence Index witnessed a plunge of 8.2 points in 2019.  At the same time, India has been ranked very low at 76th place out of 82 countries on a new Social Mobility Index compiled by the World Economic Forum. The Union Budget of 2020 has a tough challenge of meeting high expectations of the consumers beleaguered by rising prices of daily commodities. The Budget session of Parliament, the third of seventeenth Lok Sabha, will commence on January 31 and subject to the exigencies of government business, it is likely to conclude on April 3 with a 19-day recess in between.
