Political defection — commonly known as political prostitution — has become normalized in Uganda’s political arena. Politicians move from party to party in search of relevance, survival, protection, or opportunity. But what does this mean for democracy?
In this episode, we examine Uganda’s political defection culture through a structured SWOT Analysis:
STRENGTHS – Strategic survival, flexibility, dissent signaling
WEAKNESSES – Ideological emptiness, loss of trust, weakened opposition
OPPORTUNITIES – Democratic reform, new movements, wider engagement
THREATS – Political instability, voter apathy, consolidation of one-party dominance
We ask hard questions:
• Is there any ideological backbone in Ugandan politics?
• Is multiparty politics strengthening democracy — or reinforcing NRM dominance?
• Do political parties have a future beyond Museveni?
• Is federalism the only sustainable structural alternative?
This lecture goes beyond slogans and emotional politics. It challenges the very foundation of Uganda’s political culture.
