I decided to start a series of short videos sharing simple sonic explorations, without needing to be full musical "compositions." This one attempts to turn a single synth drone into a more interesting piece via guitar pedals. Full patch notes below ⤸
I'm a guitarist who has been learning modular synthesizers. I decided to avoid synth effects modules, since they are expensive and I already have a lot of guitar pedals. So I recently picked up the INTRFX, which is a 3-channel bridge between the two worlds (compensating for differences in voltage gain, input impedance, etc.).
➤ Track 1. Mutable Instruments Tides, output 1 → Erica Synths Pico VCF1 (cutoff modulated by sine LFO from Pico RND) → Boredbrain INTRFX, send 1 → Vood Lab Tremolo → INTRFX, return 1 → Pico AMIX (attenuator) → Pico OUT (left) → Zoom H6 recorder.
➤ Track 2. Tides, output 1 → Mutable Instruments Kinks, full-wave rectifier → INTRFX, send 2 (blend/mix modulated by the same sine LFO as 1.) → Earthquaker Devices Arpanoid → INTRFX, return 2 → Pico OUT (right) → H6 recorder.
➤ Track 3. Tides, output 4 ("shift" modulated by Pico VCO operating at LFO rate) → Pico MOD, VCA out (attack/decay mode, triggered by pulse from Pico RND, in time with the sine LFOs above) → INTRFX, send 3 → Meris Hedra → H6 recorder.
Additionally, Tides "smoothness" CV input is modulated by white noise from Pico RND, and its "shape" CV input is modulated by the same envelope used by Pico MOD to create the delay bursts in Track 3.
The end result is interesting, although not fun to listen to for more than a few minutes. It's a synth patch for which very little of the melodic work comes from the synth modules — pedals are actually doing most of the work!
