I’ve already looked at the role DNA plays in our cells and bodies. In this video I’ll be looking at a related topic, which is how do we inherit certain characteristics from our parents.
In the cell we find the chromosomes, and these contain genes. The chromosomes come in pairs and we inherit 1 chromosome in each pair from each of out parents. Genes though have different forms called alleles, and it is the combination of these alleles that we inherit from our parents that give us our characteristics.
In order to do this we’ll look at the inheritance of height in pea plants. These are the plants that Gregor Mendel used when he conducted his experiments on genetics in the 19th Century.
