However, as the pressures of fame mounted and Barrett increasingly used psychedelic drugs, particularly LSD, his mental health began to deteriorate. His behavior became erratic and unpredictable during live performances and studio sessions. By 1968, the band brought in David Gilmour to support and eventually replace Barrett. Though he made brief solo attempts with albums like The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (both 1970), his career as a musician effectively ended soon after.

Barrett withdrew from the public eye and returned to Cambridge, living a quiet, reclusive life under his birth name, Roger. He spent his remaining years focused on painting and gardening, shunning any connection to his past fame. Despite his brief career, Barrett's influence on Pink Floyd’s later work remained strong, most notably in Wish You Were Here (1975), which paid tribute to him in songs like "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."

Syd Barrett passed away on July 7, 2006, from pancreatic cancer. Though his legacy was deeply felt by fans and former bandmates alike, none of the members of Pink Floyd attended his funeral. This absence raised questions among fans: Why did the band members—who owed so much of their early identity and inspiration to Barrett—not attend the funeral of the man who started it all?

It is high time that we answer this question. Syd wasn’t just another brick in the wall and we do need an education on why his funeral wasn’t attended by his bandmates!
