• How to become a Successful Student
Both the IB and the A levels are treated equally when you are applying for universities. Based on my experience, American universities treat them pretty much the same.
A-Level covers more depth within each subject.
IB is more well-rounded. I personally found top UCs (UC Berkeley and UCLA) prefer IB students more.. Neither is better or worse. They both provide a rigorous and demanding education and your choice is based on what you see your next steps are.
IB Quick Tour :
There are six required subjects on the IB, and I can tell you it is REALLY hard to manage all of them successfully. IB is more holistic and philosophical, with internationalism at its very core. You'll study a range of subjects and have to complete CAS, TOK and the EE in addition to those subjects
IB is more useful from a scholarly perspective. It teaches you how to think outside of the box from traditional high school courses and helps you start to think like a college student. As far as preparing for university classes, I would say that IB is more useful.
A Levels Quick tour:
AS is he first year and A2 is the second - to be completed in a minimum of 18 months
Subjects groups : english, General studies, Humanaties, Languages, Maths, Science, Social Sciences, Technology and The Art
A-Levels you can choose as many subjects as you want. This is great if you have clear what you’ll like to study in the future, as you can focus on the subjects you’ll really need
Benefits of IB:
IB Offers flexibility for the indecisive
-You have a more holistic education and you learn more about yourself and the world around you
-Much, much better chance going abroad for uni
-Its fancier
There is a huge range of subjects in the IB, but it is really hard. You have to do another language, write an extended essay and do a lot of extra curricular work.
Disadvantages
-More time consuming
-Unnecessary workload - at least 2 subjects you do will be unrelated to your degree
-Harder grading system
-Harder offers from unis
-Because of ALL of the above, you will have a harder time trying to get into oxbridge with IB than with A-Levels
A-Levels
A Levels are more pragmatic and focused on specific subject areas. You'll generally do three subjects by the end of sixth form. Very competitive .. therefore subjets u choose is improitant and marks are also improtant.
How to decide a subjects :
1. Talk to teacher, read relevant books in ur Library, look up , what do u want to do- pick up a subject on those lines , what excites u , what do u want to learn further …
2. I would advise you to stay away from any non-traditional A Level subjects.
3. Choose a sub that u want to give ur best for the two years.
4. Get the best subject combinations ..
My Verdict
In short, IB is a more gruelling, more intensive, and more a preparatory and mind-opening season in your life before university, than it is just a hurdle of a certificate. IB definitely has an advantage in that sense, but doing A levels doesn’t disqualify you from any decent school.
If you decide to take the IB make sure you go to a very specialised school on this course
