Falling into a million solar mass black hole, from R=30M. We don't start at rest, the initial velocity is (approximately) what we'd have picked up falling from infinity. The starfield is all assumed to be black bodies at 5700K, and the colour is shifted accordingly. The dimming due to redshift and brightening due to focusing are not displayed (as the image would cover a tremendous range of brightnesses).
The black hole is actually a "matterless" Schwarzschild geometry - there is no matter anywhere (you could view this as all the mass being concentrated at the singularity). As a result, once we have sealed our fate by passing through the event horizon, we can see into an alternate universe. Boringly, it's just a mirror image of our own in this animation. In any real black hole, we would see the matter that originally collapsed to form the hole, and inside that the Schwarzschild solution is no longer appropriate.
The stars twinkle, I'm afraid, as a result of my quick-and-dirty antialiasing technique (oversample on a regular grid).
Tides are not calculated, but would be quite moderate while we passed through the horizon (though of course as we approach the singularity they increase without bound).
