Diana Princess of Wales is being treated at the Pitie Salpetriere hospital in Paris after a car accident in which her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed died.
It is believed the Princess is suffering from concussion, a broken arm and a serious injury to her thigh.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Princess was undergoing treatment for injuries received in the accident.
Diana, Princess of Wales, was seriously injured a car crash after a high speed pursuit by photographers on motorbikes.
The Mercedes vehicle, driven by an employee of the Fayed family, is said to have turned over several times.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight in a tunnel along the Seine River, while paparazzi photographers followed the couple's car.
Motorcycles belonging to the photographers have been taken away for examination by the police.
Diana's bodyguard was also seriously injured in the crash.
The couple has been the subject of intense interest and speculation from the world's press over the last month.
They were in Paris rounding off a holiday they spent in the exclusive resort of St. Tropez, the latest of several they have taken together in recent weeks.
Fayed who was 42, was the son of the owner of London's prestigious Harrod's department store, Mohamed Al Fayed.
In London there was no comment either from the department store or from Princess Diana's residence, Kensington Palace.
Buckingham Palace said that Prince Charles had been informed of the accident.
