Hilkiah’s Discovery
The lesson, based on 2 Chronicles 34, focuses on King Josiah's reign and the rediscovery of the Torah. During a restoration project for the temple, the high priest Hilkiah found a copy of the "Book of the Law"—the Torah—which had been lost or hidden for many years. Its absence had allowed sin to flourish.
When the king's secretary, Shaphan, read the book to King Josiah, the king was heartbroken and immediately tore his clothes as a sign of deep sorrow and repentance. This act showed his genuine humility and his grief over the nation's failure to follow God’s commands.
Josiah then sent a delegation to seek guidance from God. They were led to the prophetess Huldah, who confirmed the impending judgment on the nation because of their disobedience. However, because of Josiah’s humble and repentant heart, God promised that the destruction would not happen during his lifetime. The lesson highlights God’s use of a woman in ministry and affirms that He honors sincere repentance, regardless of a person's heritage.
