Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, a small organ located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. Although its exact function is still debated, research suggests the appendix may play a role in fighting infections.
In this video, we break down the causes, signs, and symptoms of appendicitis, including the most common cause—fecal blockage that leads to infection and inflammation. Left untreated, appendicitis can cause the appendix to rupture, leaking pus and bacteria into the abdominal cavity, which can be life-threatening.
We explain the three main diagnostic features that point toward appendicitis:
Pain starting around the umbilicus and moving to the right lower quadrant
Rebound tenderness (Blumberg’s sign), where pain worsens when pressure is released
Supporting symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, and abdominal bloating
You’ll also learn why rebound tenderness is a critical sign of a ruptured appendix, and how it is assessed during a physical exam.
This video is ideal for medical students, nurses, EMTs, and healthcare professionals who want to strengthen their understanding of abdominal emergencies.
