The winter of 2026 is contributing to an increased pace of deforestation works in the southern section of the Rail Baltica mainline. The area is characterised by a marshy environment, which poses challenges for the deforestation process. Due to prolonged frost, the ground has frozen sufficiently to allow deforestation machinery to operate even under winter conditions.
The deforestation challenges in the southern section of the mainline are explained by specialists from Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas and Latvian State Forests.
