Welcome back to another Welland Canal Adventure — this time we’re firing up the way-back machine and rolling footage from April 2024, or roughly seven GoPros ago in my world. We’re at Lock 1 in Port Weller, right at the Lake Ontario gateway, as the Algoma Sault comes charging upbound and clears the lock in classic Equinox-class fashion — fast, powerful, and throwing a wake that my GoPro had to survive! The Algoma Sault is a modern, Canadian-flagged self-unloader built in 2018 with a 260-foot unloading boom and tech that lets her move 5,400 tons of cargo per hour. She’s part of Algoma Central’s Equinox Class fleet and one of the most efficient bulk carriers on the lakes.
