Whether you throw off the hump or want to get straight into making large pieces, it is essential to be able to centre and relax your clay.
It is important to use technique rather than just strength to manipulate the clay. For this tutorial, I demonstrated with five kilos, however if you become familiar with using the centrifugal force of the wheel to your advantage, you can manipulate far more clay than you previously thought possible.
Next, I will be explaining how to throw off the hump, making many consistent pieces from this clay we’ve centred. Stay tuned for Part II!
