Steve Prefontaine was a legendary American distance runner from the 1970s known for his aggressive racing style, seven American records, and advocacy for athletes' rights. A seven-time NCAA champion for the University of Oregon, he competed in the 1972 Munich Olympics and was a major figure in the early days of Nike. He died tragically in a car accident in 1975 at the age of 24, but his legacy continues today through the annual Prefontaine Classic track meet.
Career and racing style
Prefontaine is one of the most iconic figures in U.S. distance running history.
He was known for his "hold nothing back" philosophy, often leading races from the front and setting a relentless pace.
At the time of his death, he held every American outdoor record from 2,000 to 10,000 meters.
He won seven NCAA titles, four in track and three in cross country, while competing for the University of Oregon.
