Scripture: Matthew 6:33 KJV
“33 BUT SEEK YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD, AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS; AND ALL THESE THINGS SHALL BE ADDED UNTO YOU.”
"Seek ye first the kingdom of God" is a core biblical directive from, which advises prioritizing GOD'S REIGN, WILL, AND RIGHTEOUSNESS ABOVE ALL EARTHLY CONCERNS.
It is part of the Sermon on the Mount, PROMISING THAT, IF ONE PUTS GOD'S PURPOSES FIRST, NECESSARY PROVISIONS LIKE FOOD AND CLOTHING WILL BE PROVIDED.
Key Aspects of Matthew 6:33:
The Command: To seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
The Promise: All necessities ("these things") will be added unto you.
Context: Found in Matthew 6:33, this verse follows teachings against worry regarding daily needs (food, clothing, life) because this should be the only thing worrying us. We are just passing by.
Meaning: It signifies making God the top priority, not as a means to get rewards, but as a commitment to His sovereignty.
Application: IT MEANS TRUSTING GOD TO PROVIDE RATHER THAN OBSESSIVELY FOCUSING ON MATERIAL SECURITY.
Introduction
Beloved brethren, we are living in a time where the gospel has slowly been mixed with material promises.
Many pulpits today speak:
More about money than about salvation,
More about possessions than about righteousness,
More about what God can give than about who God is.
But Jesus never told us to seek money.
He never told us to chase riches.
He never told us to make wealth our prayer point.
Instead, He said plainly and powerfully:
“Seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness.”
Not second.
Not after bills are paid.
Not after businesses grow.
But FIRST.
Understanding “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God”
This command comes from the Sermon on the Mount, WHERE JESUS WAS CORRECTING HUMAN PRIORITIES.
People were worried about food, clothing, tomorrow, and survival—JUST LIKE TODAY.
But Jesus shifted the focus:
Stop obsessing over what you will eat
Stop worrying about what you will wear
Stop making life all about material survival
Why?
Because WE ARE JUST PASSING BY.
This world is not our final home.
To “seek the Kingdom” means:
To prioritize God’s rule
To submit to God’s will
To live by God’s righteousness
IT IS NOT ABOUT USING GOD TO GET THINGS.
IT IS ABOUT SERVING GOD BECAUSE HE IS LORD.
The Command and the Promise
Matthew 6:33 carries two powerful truths:
1. The Command
“Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.”
This means God must be our top priority, not a backup plan.
We don’t seek God because we want money.
We seek God because He is King.
2. The Promise
“…and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Jesus did not say we will lack.
He did not say we will beg.
He did not say we will struggle endlessly.
He said “added”—meaning provision comes naturally when priorities are right.
BUT we must live accordingly to the will of God our giver, Jehovah Jireh
Stop Turning God into a Means
Church, we must be careful.
GOD IS NOT AN ATM.
Righteousness is not a transaction.
Faith is not a formula for wealth.
WE DON’T SEEK GOD TO GET THINGS— WE SEEK GOD BECAUSE HE IS GOD.
WHEN SOLOMON STOOD BEFORE GOD, HE DID NOT ASK FOR RICHES.
He asked for wisdom.
BUT ABOVE ALL, HE NEVER ASKED GOD TO AVENGE HIM!!
AND BECAUSE HIS HEART PLEASED GOD, GOD ADDED EVERYTHING ELSE.
As we seek for our biblical example, the Bible says in 1 Kings 3-7 KJV:
“3 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2 Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days.
3 AND SOLOMON LOVED THE LORD, WALKING IN THE STATUTES OF DAVID HIS FATHER: ONLY HE SACRIFICED AND BURNT INCENSE IN HIGH PLACES.
4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, ASK WHAT I SHALL GIVE THEE.
6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
9 GIVE THEREFORE THY SERVANT AN UNDERSTANDING HEART TO JUDGE THY PEOPLE, THAT I MAY DISCERN BETWEEN GOOD AND BAD: FOR WHO IS ABLE TO............
