Lucio Demare was born in Buenos Aires in 1906. He was a pianist, composer and orchestra leader. He started playing the piano at the age of six. In his teens, he performed classical music, and he played the piano to accompany silent movies at the local cinema. In 1926, Demare joined the tango orchestra of Juan and Rafael Canaro in Paris.

In 1927, Lucio Demare, Agustín Irusta, and Roberto Fugazot started the highly successful Trio Argentino. 10 years later they broke up, and at that time Demare was considered to be the one least likely to succeed on his own. But nowadays he’s the most famous of them.

In 1938 Demare started his own tango orchestra. With Raúl Kaplún on violin, Máximo Mori bandoneon, and singer Juan Carlos Miranda. Meanwhile, Lucio Demare didn’t stick to tango alone: he wrote a lot of film music as well, especially for movies directed by his brother Lucas.

At the milongas we usually hear Demare’s music from the years 1942-1945. And mostly with singer Juan Carlos Miranda. Earlier, we did a tanda of the week video with Demare and Miranda, with tangos like ‘Al compás de un tango’, ‘Malena’, ‘No te apures Carablanca’, and ‘Mañana zarpa un barco’.

Two other important singers with Demare in the 1940s were Raúl Berón – who sang with Demare for about a year, inbetween two stints with Miguel Caló – and Horacio Quintana. And this week’s tanda features 4 tangos sung by Horacio Quintana.

Quintana was born in 1920, in Teodelina, in the province of Santa Fe. His real name was Ramón Domingo Gutiérrez. And when he started performing he was known as Tito Gutiérrez. It was Lucio Demare who persuaded him to change his stage name to Horacio Quintana, when he joined Demare’s orchestra in 1944. Together they recorded 14 tracks, 12 of them tangos.

The first track of the tanda is ‘Torrente’. Music written by singer/violinist Hugo Gutiérrez, and lyrics by Homero Manzi. A beautiful but sad song about heartache, and a bitter break-up. In Manzi’s own words: “la triste y la más gris canción de amor”.

Next is ‘Corazón no le digas a nadie’. Music by Enrique Juan Munné, and lyrics by Luis Castiñeira. From the opening line ‘la noche del adiós’ we already know this story will not end well. It’s another tango about break-up, and our protagonist is in pain. This tango is equally sad, but at least not as bitter as Torrente – that’s something I guess.

The third track is ‘Me quedé mirándola’. Music written by Vicente Spina and lyrics by Roberto Miro. The story goes like this: after a terrible year of being alone he saw her again… but there was no hope of love, and he just stood there watching her. Demare’s orchestra sounds very lyrical, almost sentimental – but notice the attack by the violins and bandoneons; Demare is anything but soft.

The final track is ‘Solamente ella’, a stand-out track. Music written by Lucio Demare himself, with lyrics again by Homero Manzi. Solamente ella was also recorded by Carlos Di Sarli with Jorge Durán, and by Francisco Lomuto with Alberto Rivera. Both versions are fine, but I think Quintana has the best timing. Compared to the first tracks of the tanda, the lyrics are much more poetic this time. So perhaps by the end of the tanda, everything will be alright.
