Right after NAMM Show, something special happened.
Thomas was invited to dinner by the newest member of the BluGuitar family: Walter Trout.

Walter had reached out to Thomas after purchasing an AMP1 Mercury Edition, which he used extensively in the studio while recording his latest album. He was excited—not only about the amp’s tone and feel—but, as he told Thomas, also about Thomas’ playing. That first connection led to a great evening in Huntington Beach… and eventually to something much bigger.

At Walter’s home in Huntington Beach, Thomas sat down for a deep, unfiltered, and very personal conversation. What followed was a long and intense interview covering everything: guitars, tone, the music business, life, survival, and a career that spans over three decades as a solo artist—after cutting his teeth as a sideman with legends like John Mayalland Canned Heat.

Walter Trout is a true icon of modern Blues-Rock—a titan known for his fire-breathing guitar style, raw honesty, and unmistakable voice. Before launching his solo career in 1989, he played alongside greats like John Lee Hooker, was a driving force in Canned Heat (1981–84), and became a standout member of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers (1984–89).

Since then, he has released over 30 solo albums and built a reputation for high-energy performances that defy age and expectation.

In 2014, Walter survived a near-fatal liver failure. His comeback album, Battle Scars, became one of the most powerful blues releases of the decade—an unflinching reflection on life, mortality, and resilience. His latest release, Sign of the Times, continues his streak of chart-topping records, following the success of Broken, which reached #1 on the Billboard Blues Charts.

We also talk gear. Walter is famous for his heavily worn 1973 Fender Stratocaster, lovingly nicknamed “Old Girl.” Due to the weight of the vintage instrument causing shoulder issues, he now tours primarily with a custom ultra-lightweight Delaney “Austin” model—built to match the tone, feel, and soul of his original ’73 Strat.
