L. van Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 "Waldstein"
Sonata No. 21, Op. 53 is generally known as the “Waldstein”. It takes its name from Count Ferdinand Ernst von Waldstein, Beethoven’s friend and benefactor, whom the piece is dedicated to. This Sonata represents a new stage in Beethoven’s work, characterized by a widening of the tonal space, diverse pianistic innovations and an even further increased sense of formal coherence. Beethoven was well aware that this sonata was a step forward for him. This is also illustrated by the fact, that the andante favori, initially intended to be the slow movement, was replaced by a slightly mysterious short introduction that enhances the work's architectural balance. The allegro con brio, the first movement, goes far beyond previous first movements in terms of breadth and modulating intensity. It is based on strongly contrasting thematic elements, thus allowing Beethoven to give the development a new dramatic dimension, venturing into particularly daring modulations. The Introduzione develops gently, as if emerging from profound silence. The sonata ends with a significant virtuoso rondo whose theme, according to Jürgen Uhde, is based on the song of a boatman on the Rhine. It is developed above a long harmonic pedal. The interludes of the rondo are quite brilliant, and the movement goes on to finish with a euphoric prestissimo coda with thrilling trills, glissandi octaves and a triumphant fanfare.
