This is my 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT.
The video demonstrates what has been happening due to a faulty detent ring in my van's wireless ignition node (WIN) module. It clearly shows the issue; The ignition return spring moves the FOB key from the "start" position past the “run” position and into the "accessory" position thus shutting down the engine along with the power steering, brake booster and more importantly, the vehicles air bags.
This test was performed with the vehicle safely parked. Although, it can also happen at any time while the vehicle is in motion, therein lies the danger. It has happened to me, twice. Fortunately, both times the traffic at the time was relatively light and I was able to pull over, start up and move on.
My concern is where and when it will happen next. On the freeway during rush hour? On the highway as I'm passing another vehicle? The most appropriate description would be to call it a ticking time bomb!
This is a problem on Dodge Grand Caravans produced from 2008 to 2010. There has been a recall (L25) issued last fall but parts to fix the problem have not yet been produced for my vehicle. Other than this issue, the vehicle runs perfect! The manufacturer is fully aware of my vehicle's issue and a Chrysler technician was able to produce the same results as this video at my local dealership. Their solution was to offer a new WIN module installed at no cost to me. Unfortunately, it would come with the same recalled detent ring.
It was filmed on April 25, 2015. Pease note, there are no extra keys/rings on the FOB key, just the FOB key itself.
