Obsessed with the founders right now because of a fanfiction I'm writing, so when I had writer's block one night, this happened.
My take on the founders is that Helga was the youngest and was brought in because Rowena had been friends with her mother. Together, they find Godric and Salazar, who are both fighting their own fight against Muggles and then they build their home together at Hogwarts. I'm a sucker for inter-founder relationships too, so there's a bit of that in there.
