Session Title: Application of microbial community models to human gut bacteria – challenges and insights
Event: [UMCW06] Microbial communities: current approaches and open challenges
Mathematical models of microbial communities allow exploring their dynamics in different conditions, thus enabling community design as well as the investigation of scenarios that would be difficult to replicate in the lab. However, developing such models in practice is challenging for a number of reasons including accurate measurements of species abundances and model parameters. Here, I will discuss how we dealt with these problems when modeling three- and four-species synthetic human gut communities grown in vitro, mention additional challenges we encountered and talk about the insights we gained on the way.
