First time riding this 4-year-old horse at full gallop. I miscalculated my stirrup length, and gravity didn't hesitate to remind me.
My left leg is longer than my right. Logic says, shorten the right stirrup. I shortened the left. Arithmetic failure. Physics doesn't negotiate. Center of mass shifted left, and at full gallop, I slid off.
I grabbed the neck and held on while the horse kept going. Surprisingly, there was no panic. The horse stayed calm, and I just waited for the stop.
Despite the chaos, the 4-year-old horse was flawless. As for me, my upper back is sore and my thumb hurts (mostly because a dog bit it 10 days ago), but the real lesson here is that I need to revisit basic math. I got straight back on for another gallop. Fear is not an option.
