The Waitomo Firefly Caves were first explored in 1887 by the local Maori ruler Tan Tinoro, accompanied by the English explorer Fred Mace. The local Maori people knew about the existence of the Caves, but the underground caves were never intensively explored until Fred and Tan ventured to thoroughly study everything. They built a raft from flax shoots and with candles in hand swam to the cave, where the stream went into the dungeon.
