In this tutorial, you will learn how to create the illusion of water caustics in your level using the Light Function material domain mode in Unreal Engine 4.
What is caustics?
Caustics is what happens when light shines through a curved translucent surface, such as a clear drinking glass, or the waves of your swimming pool, bending it. As a result, concentrated rays of light are cast within the shadow of the glass or beneath the waves of the water.
The caustic optical effect, or "wavy lines", that you see when light refracts through large bodies of water is actually quite easy to set up and looks great in underwater scenes, or if you are just interested in creating a really neat effect.
What is a light function?
A light function is a material that can be projected through a stationary or moveable light in Unreal Engine, kind of like placing a filter on a light in real life! In this example, our particular filter will be animated!
Ariana takes you through her approach to this process, from creating the texture in Substance Designer to setting up and animating the material in UE4, and finally to placing the light in your scene!
