• Why do Chinese Billionaires Keep Disappear...
Video Transcript:
In China, no one is out of reach of the Chinese Communist Party. They have kidnapped award winning artists, billionaire tech entrepreneurs, and world class athletes. The more influence you have on the masses, the more dangerous you are in the eyes of the CCP. If this is the power that the government holds over the most powerful Non-Governmental Actors in China, then what power does it hold over the average citizen?
Part 1 - Ai Weiwei
Influenced by, and often compared to, Andy Warhol, Ai Weiwei is a Chinese artist who is a longtime critic of the Chinese government. On April 3rd, 2011, he was arrested on trumped up “economic charges”. With his arrest, the CCP sent a message: No One is Safe. Eventually, Ai Weiwei was released 3 months later on June 22nd, but was not permitted to leave the country. After Ai Weiwei received his passport in 2015, he left the country. It’s hard to see him coming back to China, but if he did, would he even be able to return to his new home in Germany?
Part 2 - Jack Ma
A proud Harvard reject, Jack Ma is one of the most ambitious and driven men of the 21st century. He is the founder of E-commerce Titan Alibaba, the “Amazon of China”. At one time, Jack Ma was viewed as an eccentric celebrity who often spoke out in public. That was until he made the mistake of speaking out against the CCP. Right before his company was about to release a new online banking service, Jack Ma disappeared. He reappeared at bizarre places and times, including at a rural Chinese elementary school and on a video conference with Vladimir Putin, in which he does not speak. Although we know Jack Ma is alive, we are not sure if he is free, and if he is, his personality has completely changed to a much more reserved Jack Ma compared to flamboyant Rockstar he once was. Jack Ma’s story isn’t over, but right now, it’s looking like he isn’t one of the “Few” with good endings.
Part 3 - Peng Shuai
A Chinese tennis star, Peng Shuai disappeared after accusing former Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault in this post pictured. Initially posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo, it was taken down after a mere 20 minutes, presumably by the CCP. Eventually, she was seen, but like Jack Ma, her freedom or safety isn’t guaranteed, all we know is that she is alive. The international community has condemned this situation, and everyone wants to know: Where is Peng Shuai?
Conclusion:
Unfortunately, it gets worse. This is what the CCP can do to the most famous in China, the ones often considered “untouchable”. But the average citizen is much more vulnerable. Ai Weiwei’s business associates also disappeared around the time Ai Weiwei was arrested, and were later released. Another Jack Ma esque executive, Xiao Jianhua, has yet to reappear after going missing. And, we still don’t know if Peng Shuai is safe. If you are a Chinese citizen, the CCP can you make you disappear, and very few will question it. Most are safe though, as long as they don’t question the government.
