I first heard this piece played by Anthony Hughes in Peter Feuchtwanger's Master Class in Huede in the summer of 2009. Anthony's playing, and Peter's teaching, remain an inspiration to me to this day. It was my introduction to what some call the "Bel Canto" style of piano playing, coming more from the Chopin "School" tradition, than from the more widely known Liszt School. I do my best to live up to their example with my own playing of the piece.
I remember someone approaching me after I played it "live" asking me in what felt like an accusatory tone, "is it a sentimental piece?" I answered, "yes, unabashedly so". It is a piece with great heart.
I am also announcing today, January 2, 2025, that with this post, I am restarting my #respite and #unknowncomposersworth hearing playlist. I don't know about you, but I feel absolutely barraged with what feels like an unending drumbeat of bad news, here in the USA, around the world. I could catalog some of it for you, but I don't want to give it any energy here.
Instead, I offer this little piece, a swansong, bitter sweet, and a favorite of my last teacher, Peter Feuchtwanger as a way to take my own mind off the ongoing cacophony and get some respite. I hope it does the same for you.

If you want to support my work, with #respite and #unknowncomposersworthhearing, you can do it on Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/andre..., or on Venmo to @AndrewKrausPiano. I appreciate your interest, and your contribution helps me keep things running in the studio. A budget of close to $1000 a year is not out of line to keep the grand piano tuned, voiced and regulated.
