In this video, I explain the Hard and Soft Acids and Bases (HSAB) Theory, an extension of the Lewis acid-base theory. HSAB theory is an important concept in inorganic chemistry and coordination chemistry, helping us understand why certain acids prefer to bond with certain bases.
Hard acids and bases have high charge density, small ionic size, and low polarizability.
Soft acids and bases have low charge density, larger size, and are highly polarizable.
According to HSAB theory, hard-hard and soft-soft interactions are more stable and favorable.
This concept is widely used to explain reaction mechanisms, stability of complexes, metal-ligand interactions, and selectivity in chemical reactions.
If you want to strengthen your understanding of acid-base theories, chemical bonding, and molecular interactions, this video will give you a clear foundation.
