The Japanese archipelago has been inhabited by humans for at least 38,000 years.However, the most significant cultural transformations have occurred in the past 3,000 years, when the inhabitants transitioned from foraging to widespread rice farming and eventually to a technologically advanced imperial state.These rapid changes, along with Japan's geographical isolation from continental Eurasia, make it an interesting case for studying migratory patterns related to agricultural spread and economic intensification in Asia.Before farming cultures arrived, the archipelago was home to diverse hunter-gatherer-fisher groups known as the Jomon culture, which began around 16,500 years ago.The Jomon people were among the earliest users of pottery in the world, adapting varied subsistence strategies and experiencing fluctuating population densities.
