BOSNIA: ZUC: FRENCH NATO TROOPS DANGEROUS MISSION

As Christmas celebrations continue the hard and often dangerous work of policing Bosnia's fragile peace moves on relentlessly.

These French troops, members of NATO's Implementation Force, I-FOR, are accompanying Bosnian army officers to check on one of the most dangerous front lines in the country.

The high ground at Zuc overlooks Serbian areas around Sarajevo. It was captured by the Bosnian Army from the Serbs after vicious fighting in 1992. At least 600 Bosnian Army soldiers died for this hill during the war.

The French troops' mission was to check the government forces had withdrawn under the terms of local agreements.

As the French troops took command they made it clear that if the Bosnian Army had refused to pull out they were well able to force them to do so.

"The aim of this mission is to be sure that the Bosnian side effectively disengages its forces from this line. We told them yesterday that today we don't want to see anybody in this place. You can see there is nobody here. We came with enough force in case they were still here".

From now on NATO is in charge of this strategic point above the Bosnian capital.
