Jesus' Triumphal Entry in Matthew 21

The time has now come for Jesus to openly disclose his identity as the righteous, Davidic Messiah. Jews from all over the ancient world had gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Passover. During this season, nationalistic sentiment and Messianic hope ran high. As Jesus enters the city the crowd cries out “Hosanna!” This is the transliteration of the Hebrew expression that means “O save!”

They received Jesus as their anticipated Davidic king, whom they believe will miraculously save them from Roman oppression. They spread their cloaks on the ground before Jesus, symbolizing their submission to Jesus as king. They wave palm branches that symbolize Jewish nationalism and victory. The whole city is in an uproar. But it includes a mixed crowd. Some recognize Jesus’ entrance as a fulfillment of Messianic prophecy. Some of merely curious, caught up in the excitement over the prophet from Galilee who has been causing such a stir.

But Jerusalem’s religious establishment are watching for a way to get rid of Jesus, because they see him as one who has come to usurp their power, and threaten national security.
