ALGERIA - CRISIS

Описание: (28 Jan 1960) Algeria is once again the focal point of a major French crisis. Trouble started, when General Massu, openly disagreeing with Government policy, was recalled to France. The root of the trouble was the fear of the French settlers (and there are over a million of them in Algeria) that de Gaulle's policy would prove to be a "sell-out" to the Algerians. As troops were brought in, the situation grew more tense. Eventually, demonstrators and troops exchanged shots, and there were many casualties. ® In May 1958, riots broke out, backed by the Army in Algeria. As to-day, so then the French Republic was in grave danger. It brought General de Gaulle to power, and a hero of the moment was General Massu. France was saved, and Algiers gave de Gaulle an overwhelming ovation on his drive through the city. But now, so soon after it, there is fear and distrust of his plans for the country. "For myself", says de Gaulle, "I shall do my duty".
