Ali Birra, born Ali Mohammed Musa on September 29, 1950, in Ganda Kore, Dire Dawa, was raised by his father after his parents' separation. He attended Arabic school and learned to write the language while primarily speaking Oromo. He completed his education in a local public school until the sixth grade.
As a highly regarded Ethiopian singer, Ali Birra became the most popular Oromo icon and an influential artist across various regions in Ethiopia. He performed songs in Amharic, Afar, Arabic, and Somali.

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd, was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Canada, to Ethiopian immigrant parents Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye. After his parents separated as a toddler, his mother raised him in the Scarborough neighborhood of Toronto.
