Hamartiology - All about SIN - a shocking reality that affects every one of us - and how to overcome

Hamartiology is the doctrine of Sin. This term comes from Hamartia - a word for sin - that means to miss the mark, to err. Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Sin is a failing to conform to the will of God. Sin is a Darkness of the Mind, a Defiled Heart, a Deceitful Will, and a Dulled Conscience.

Men are sinners by nature or disposition - “The heart of the human problem is the problem of the human heart”. The only solution is a spiritual heart transplant - regeneration.

Sin is variously described as:
Bending Out of Shape What is Straight: iniquity.
Breaching a Boundary: trespass, transgression.
A Debt to the Divine: Sin is a debt.
Rebellion in Relation to God’s Rules: disobedience.
Impiety in Relation to Deity: ungodliness.
Stumbling: the Fall.
The Reverse of Righteousness: unrighteousness.
Straying From the Straight Way: as a lost sheep.

Original Sin: Satan was first to sin, then Adam and Eve. Man was given a free will and rebelled against God.

Adam’s sin was reckoned to his descendants. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Sin brings death. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Bible tells of Sins of omission - things that we should do or are required to do, that we don’t do. For example: failing to evangelise, failing to give, failing to go to church, etc. James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

There are various Sins Against The Holy Spirit - the blasphemy of the Holy Ghost, Grieving the Spirit, Quenching the Spirit, Resisting the Spirit.

Abominations are sins and behaviours that disgust God.

Thank God, we can be saved from sin.

What does God do with our Sins? He washes them away, forgives us from them, puts them behind His back, separates us from them, blots them out, remembers them no more, justifies us from them, buries them in the deepest sea, put them all on Christ.

James 1:12-15 …every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Sin disrupts fellowship with God. ...your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.

The penalty of sin is death - Physical death - Spiritual death - Eternal death.

As far as Depravity - mankind is completely affected by sin - yet not so depraved that he cannot respond to the gospel.

Sin passed from Adam to all men. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

The Christian can know Victory. And we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
