Understanding the potential roller coaster:
When you eat, your blood glucose rises.
Insulin helps to clear the glucose from your bloodstream.
However, if the glucose rise is too much, an insulin spike may cause your blood glucose to then drop below your baseline.
This is called reactive hypoglycemia.
To get glucose above baseline again, your body releases three hormones: glucagon, epinephrine, and cortisol.
On top of that, reactive hypoglycemia can make you fatigued, hungry, and irritable. These sensations can drive you to reach for more food.
At the same time, the hormones are raising your blood glucose along with the food.
So you end up with a bigger glucose response, which can result in another bout of reactive hypoglycemia.
The cycle starts all over again.
What you can do:
Eat foods that help keep your blood glucose more stable.
Pair carbohydrates with fiber, healthy fat, and protein to help slow glucose response.
Track glucose with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM).
