Tropical Cyclone Idai has formed in the Mozambique Channel and will bring flooding rain and strong winds to Madagascar and parts of the Mozambique coastline into early week. According to NASA, Tropical Cyclone Idai is poised to move inland over East African countries that have already been soaked with rain by the same storm system.
Nasa's satellite acquired an image of the cyclone as it spun across the Mozambique Channel. Around this time, the potent category 3 storm carried maximum sustained winds of about 105 knots (120 miles per hour) and intensifying to category 4 within 24 hours, forecast to landfall in the Beira region by Thursday
One week earlier, the developing storm delivered high winds and heavy rain to Mozambique and Malawi, where it caused deadly floods. 23 people died, 29 injured and 12 missing. Forecasters are calling for Idai to make landfall on Mozambique later this week on Thursday or Friday, bringing a second round of wind and rain to the region.
Idai is forecast to strengthen as it tracks away from Madagascar. Rain and gusty winds are expected to further lash the country's west-central coast into next week, with more localized downpours targeting other parts of northern Madagascar.
Rain and wind may start to increase along the coast of central Mozambique late Wednesday night or Thursday before the worst of the storm rages around Friday. Idai can slam onshore with destructive winds and flooding rain in the vicinity of Beira. Life-threatening storm-surge flooding can put coastal communities underwater near and south of where Idai makes landfall.
Seas will further become too dangerous for vessels and small craft across the southern Mozambique Channel as this week progresses and Idai takes aim at central Mozambique...
