Here's a speaker swap comparo between the stock U.K made Vintage 30 & an older 80s U.K. G12T-75 in my Rectifier 1x12 cabinet. Running my ESP Horizon NT-II with EMG Het Set pickups through my Mark IIC++ HRG amp in 60W mode. Settings are identical between the vids so you can just hear the speakers. In hind sight it may have sounded better if I had turned the Volume 1 down to 2 or a little less.. I have the SM57 right at the edge of the dust cap & cone on both speakers, angled in towards the center.
As I've seen before, I think the V30 might record a little better but I prefer the G12T-75 in the room. I personally prefer the G12T-75 with the old Mark II and Mark III amps. They are so mid heavy as an amp, that paired with the darker & more scooped 75 I think it works very well. I think the V30s started to sound better with the Mark IV and newer.
One thing that I've noticed with these setups is something that doesn't always come through on the recording. The V30s are more fizzy, and the G12T-75s are more articulate. To me when you're playing big high gain chords the 75s can really hold the note separation better and more bloomy.
V30 1:38
G12T-75 3:06
Also, if you're looking for a guy to make you a real nice custom headshell for your Mark amp talk to Scott [email protected]. He's done a few for me including this one, great fit & finish.
