The heart is divided into a right side and a left side. The right side receives blood from the systemic venous system and pumps it into the pulmonary arterial system. The left side receives blood from the pulmonary venous system and pumps it into the systemic arterial system.
Each side is divided into an atrium and a ventricle. Of the two the ventricle is the more powerful chamber and is responsible for pumping the blood into the arterial systems . The atria meanwhile receive the blood from the venous systems and move it into the ventricles to be pumped onwards.
The rhythmic cycle of contractions of the chambers of the heart is known as the cardiac cycle and is controlled by electrical signals which are generated rhythmically in the sinoatrial node and which are conducted to all the muscle tissue of the heart at the right time to produce the organised contractions that lead to the cardiac cycle.
