Описание: What is COPD? Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, commonly known as COPD, is a condition that damages the lungs over time. It’s not a single disease but rather a group of lung conditions that obstruct airflow and cause breathing-related problems. The two most common conditions that contribute to COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which we will explain. But for now, both conditions result in damage to the lungs and the airways, which leads to the hallmark symptoms of COPD. To better understand COPD, it's essential to first know how healthy lungs function. When we breathe in, air travels down our windpipe and into the lungs through two large tubes called bronchi. These bronchi divide into many smaller tubes called bronchioles, which end in clusters of tiny air sacs called alveoli. These alveoli have very thin walls full of tiny blood vessels called capillaries. As oxygen in the air passes into these blood vessels, carbon dioxide, passes out of the capillaries into the air sacs to be exhaled. In emphysema, the walls of the alveoli are damaged, causing them to lose their elasticity. Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, involves inflammation and irritation of the bronchial tubes, which are the main airways that lead into the lungs. This inflammation causes the lining of the bronchial tubes to swell and produce excess mucus, which can clog the airways and further restrict airflow.
