A TriMet MAX train crashed with a Portland Streetcar and derailed near the Lloyd Center Mall Wednesday morning, Portland Fire & Rescue confirmed.
PF&R first reported the incident shortly after 10 a.m. near Northeast 7th Avenue and Holladay, saying there was a collision between a MAX train and a Portland Streetcar.
Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Portland Fire & Rescue said, with initial reports saying that one person was "slightly pinned in" after the crash.
One of those taken to the hospital was the Portland Streetcar operator, TriMet spokesperson Tyler Graf said, calling the person’s injury minor.
Crews said that 3 cars were off the track, with some visible damage to the Streetcar. The collision will take several hours to clean up, according to Graf.
One deputy with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said this kind of incident is very unusual.
"I couldn’t say for sure but I’ve never heard of this happening before. I’ve been in Portland my whole life, I don’t think this has ever happened before," said Deputy John Plock.
Brody Worrell works across the street from that intersection. He witnessed the collision.
"Just heard a super loud crash and probably caught the last five to seven seconds of the streetcar, this orange one, just coming up onto the curb towards the middle of the street," said Worrell.
TriMet said the crash did not impact any vehicles. Worrell said it was a close call.
"It was scary, and our van was parked right on the street too. So, I was afraid it was going to smash into the van too. Thankfully it stopped right before and then we were able to move the van but yeah, a little scary," he said.
From here, the sheriff's office plans to review video footage from the trains before determining a cause later this week.
At this point, we do not know how many people were on the two trains at the time of the crash.
There are shuttle buses transporting passengers between Old Town and the Gateway Transit Center. Riders should check TriMet's website for updates, and expect delays.
