On this International Women’s Day, we call for more women in politics, in particular at the local and regional level.
One of the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. While progress has already been made in fields such as education and equal pay, women and girls remain underrepresented in political decision-making roles.
The balanced participation of women and men in political and public decision-making is a condition for justice and democracy.
Women are deterred from entering politics due to challenges that include negative cultural perceptions about women in leadership and violence against women, including online harassment.
