The first step is to calculate the internal axial forces at the specified location. The internal axial force at a point is found by taking a sectional cut at the location of interest. After taking the sectional cut, force equilibrium is applied by summing the internal and external axial forces and set it equal to zero in order to solve for the particular axial force. This approach is replicated until all internal axial forces are found.
The second step is to calculate the cross-sectional area at the specified location. The cross-sectional area of a circular shaft is equal to pi times the diameter at the particular location squared divided by four.
The last step is to calculate the average normal stress. The average normal stress at a particular location is equal to the normal axial force divided by the cross-sectional area. A negative value for average normal stress indicates compression, and a positive value for average normal stress indicates tension.
