Snow completely changed our original hiking plans, so instead of scrambling up a mountain, we chose a different adventure — a winter hike to the stunning Ink Pots in Banff National Park.I had wanted to visit the Ink Pots for a long time after seeing breathtaking summer photos, and I was curious to experience their unique beauty in winter.
Our hike began with a peaceful walk through a snowy forest filled with wildlife: we met some squirrels and a grouse. Then along the way, we had an unexpected standoff with a ram. Thankfully, it decided to move off the trail after a moment of careful observation.
When we finally reached the Ink Pots, the scenery felt almost magical. Even though parts of the springs were covered in snow, the fairytale-like atmosphere only made the place more beautiful and serene.
With some daylight left before sunset, we continued our adventure to Johnston Canyon, a first-time visit for Klara. The canyon is undeniably spectacular, but the crowds made it feel less enjoyable. Returning toward Moose Meadows, the quiet forest trail felt like a much-needed escape from the busy tourist area.
Ink Pots is definitely going on my list of hikes to revisit in summer for a more relaxed experience. As for Johnston Canyon — it’s beautiful, but I’m not sure it’s my kind of hike.
If you love winter hiking in the Canadian Rockies, Banff trails, this hike is for you.
