Susanna Gartmayer
Viennese bass clarinetist Susanna Gartmayer studied fine arts, which is perhaps why her playing is imbued with abstract soundscapes as well as rhythmic structures and free-jazz elements. She is particularly interested in the polyphonic sonic possibilities of deep clarinets as well as the theory and practice of collaborative working processes in bands and collectives.
Her solo program is based on her 2015 debut recording entitled AOUIE, where the titles of the pieces, all vowels, come from formations formed by the oral cavity that must be performed to create a special multiphony or to extract individual overtones.
